Privacy policy

The short version: we only collect what we need to answer you and run the service, and we never sell your information.

Rural IoT is a service of Alien IT Solutions (ABN 32 385 519 280). This page explains what information we collect, why we collect it, and what we do with it. We handle your information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles under the Privacy Act 1988.

What we collect

  • When you contact us. Your name, phone number, email, and whatever you choose to tell us in your message, plus the standard technical information sent with the form, such as your IP address, browser type and referring page.
  • When you visit the site. Standard analytics such as the pages you view, rough location and device type, through Google Analytics, plus basic visit statistics from our content network and server logs our host keeps for security.
  • If you become a customer. The details we need to set up and support the system, and the readings and alerts it produces.

How we use it

  • To reply to your enquiry and explain your options.
  • To set up, run and support the monitoring you have asked for, including sending alerts to the people you choose.
  • To keep the website working and secure.

We do not use your details for unrelated marketing, and we do not sell or rent them to anyone.

Who we share it with

We share information only with the services we use to run Rural IoT, and only as far as they need it to do their job:

  • The servers that host and serve the website, including our content network (Cloudflare), which also records basic visit statistics.
  • Google Analytics, which gives us aggregate figures on how people use the site.
  • Our spam filter (Akismet), which checks each enquiry and its technical information for spam before it reaches us.
  • Our email providers, including Twilio, which deliver your enquiry to our inbox.
  • The messaging services that deliver alerts to the people you nominate, if you become a customer.

Some of these services store or process data outside Australia, including in the United States. Where we disclose information overseas, we take reasonable steps to make sure it is handled in a way consistent with the Australian Privacy Principles.

We may also disclose information where the law requires it. Otherwise, your information stays with us.

Cookies and analytics

The site uses Google Analytics, which sets cookies to measure how people use the site. You can refuse cookies in your browser, or use the Google Analytics opt out, and the site will still work.

Keeping your information

We keep personal information only as long as we need it for the purposes above, or as long as the law requires. After that we take reasonable steps to destroy it or de-identify it. We take reasonable steps to protect what we hold.

Your choices

You can ask us what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Contact us using the details below and we will sort it out. If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, please tell us first, and if we cannot resolve it you can raise it with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.
